Device development

I began to develop ideas for a sense enhancing device to deploy amongst the landscape. I think the most important part of this site to consider is the earth on the ground. If not for the clay content in the ground, the landscape would be entirely natural and untouched by human intervention.
I wanted my device to help me record information about the soil/ground/earth on site. I drew up some different ideas, devices to filtrate the water, to purify the clay- ready to test back in the studio.

A device to separate the liquid from a clay sample, whilst simutaneously producing a clay ‘patty’ which can be dried and the colours, patterns and textures recorded. The liquid will be tested for its PH level to begin an investigation into whether plants could be grown on the site.
Working much like a traditional flower press, the clay pressing device is made from laminated ply wood with a central hole to load clay to be pressed and filtered.
